Sentence Building for Struggling Writers (Simple, Powerful Strategy)

Building writing skills, confidence and connection are part of everything My Learning Farm does!
Building writing skills, confidence and connection are part of everything My Learning Farm does!

When writing feels hard, students often don’t know where to begin. One of the best ways to reduce overwhelm is to teach sentence building—the foundation of all writing.

At My Learning Farm, we often start with a simple structure:

⭐ Who + Did What + Where/When + Why/How

Examples:

  • The puppy ran outside because it heard a noise.

  • Ava built a project on the farm with her team.

Then we grow it:

🌿 add adjectives

🌿 add prepositional phrases

🌿 add conjunctions

🌿 combine two short sentences into one stronger sentence

Sentence building works because it gives students a map. They aren’t guessing what to do—they are following a structure.

If your child struggles with writing, sentence-level work is often the missing link between “I know the answer” and “I can write it down.”
